このBEHIND THE CRAFTシリーズでは、Hugooの製品がどのように生まれたのか、その開発の裏側をお伝えしていきます。私たちが大切にしているデザインの哲学、機能性へのこだわり、そして完成までの試行錯誤。単に「ものをつくる」ということではなく、限りある子育ての時間を豊かにするための視点から、プロダクトを生み出す背景をご紹介できればと思っています。

今回ご紹介するのは、2025年4月に発売予定の「Dual Layered Mothers Bag」。育児をするすべての人に寄り添いながら、ライフスタイルに溶け込む新しいバッグを目指して開発しました。

開発のきっかけ

息子が2歳を迎え、自分の足で歩く喜びを覚えはじめた頃。気づけば、ほんの一瞬の隙に遠くまで駆けていってしまうことも増えました。

遊び場をみつけて駆け寄る息子

これまで愛用していたのはトートバッグ。けれど、両手を自由に使いたいこの時期には、もっとしなやかに動けるバッグが必要だと感じたのです。

市場にあるバッグを見て感じたのは、機能性が重視されたものの多くが「育児専用」のデザインになりがち。ファッションの一部としても使いたいと考えたときに、選択肢が限られるということでした。特に男性が持つことを想定していないものが多く、カラーやフォルムが女性向けにデザインされていることがほとんど。育児をするのは決して女性だけではないのに、なぜこんなにも選択肢が限られているのか。もっとユニセックスに使えるバッグがあってもいいのではないか。そう考えたことが、このバッグを開発するきっかけになりました。

既存のバッグを徹底リサーチ

理想のマザーズバッグをつくるには、まず現状を知ることから。市場に出ているバッグをいくつも購入し、実際に使い込むことからスタートしました。

収納力のあるもの、デザイン性に優れたもの、軽量なもの。それぞれに良い点がありましたが、「これひとつで満足できる」というものはありませんでした。荷物がたっぷり入るバッグは、いざ必要なときにものが取り出しにくかったり、スタイリッシュなデザインのものは、育児シーンにおいて機能性が足りなかったり。どのバッグにも一長一短があり、すべての理想を兼ね備えたものは見つかりませんでした。

では、Hugooならどんなバッグをつくるべきか。実際に使用した経験をもとに、私たちが追求すべきデザインの条件を明確にしました。

Hugooが考える理想のマザーズバッグ

このバッグの開発において、Hugooが特にこだわったポイントは次の通りです。

・必要なものがすぐに取り出せる機能性・男女兼用で持てる洗練されたデザイン

・一見してマザーズバッグに見えないが、育児に適した構造

・旅行でも使えるほどの大容量

・ベビーカーに簡単に取り付けられる仕様

・離乳食やミルクを整理して持ち運べる収納力

これらの条件を満たすバッグをつくるため、素材選びから構造設計まで、細部に至るまで検討を重ねました。シンプルなデザインの中に、育児バッグとしての機能を最大限に詰め込む。目指したのは、ライフスタイルに馴染む「育児のためだけではないバッグ」です。

The Inspiration Behind the Design

When my son turned two, he became more confident in walking on his own. But even as he enjoyed his newfound independence, he would still often ask to be carried when he got tired or needed comfort.

That’s when I started looking for a mothers bag that was truly functional and easy to use. But as I explored the market, I realized that most options leaned heavily toward feminine designs and colors. There were very few bags that felt versatile enough for both moms and dads.

I wanted something more minimalist, highly functional, and truly unisex—a bag that could transition effortlessly from parenting duties to everyday life. That’s where the idea for the Dual Layered Mothers Bag was born.

Understanding the Market Through Hands-on Testing

To create the ideal mothers bag, we needed to first understand the strengths and weaknesses of existing products. We purchased multiple popular mothers bags and put them to the test in real-life parenting situations.

Each bag had its advantages—some were spacious, others had sleek designs, and a few were lightweight. But none offered the perfect balance of practicality, style, and functionality.

A spacious bag often lacked accessibility, making it hard to retrieve items quickly. A stylish bag sometimes sacrificed essential features needed for parenting. No single bag checked all the boxes.

So, we set out to design a bag that could truly meet the needs of modern parents—one that didn't just look good but also worked seamlessly in real-life parenting scenarios.

The Key Design Principles Behind the Dual Layered Mothers Bag

Through our research and testing, we established the core design principles that would guide the development of our bag:

• A unisex design that looks great on both moms and dads
• A large capacity, making it suitable for travel and extended outings
• Quick-access compartments for essential items
• A stroller-compatible design for hands-free convenience
• A dedicated space for baby food and formula to keep things organized
• A sleek, sophisticated look that doesn’t scream "diaper bag" but still offers full functionality

With these objectives in mind, we started crafting the design and selecting materials that would strike the perfect balance between elegance and practicality.
