前回のBEHIND THE CRAFTでは、私たちが目指す理想のマザーズバッグについてお話ししました。使う人の生活に本当に寄り添うために、どんな視点でバッグをつくろうとしているか。その想いや条件を共有させていただきました。
そして今回は、それらの条件をもとに試作デザインについてご紹介します。
Hugooの製品づくりは、「こうだったらいいのに」を一つずつかたちにしていく作業の連続です。
私たちはまず、理想とする使い心地を実現するために必要な機能と、日常のコーディネートになじむ洗練されたデザイン性、その両方を高いレベルで両立させることを目指しました。
最初に取りかかったのは、設計図面とデザインイメージの製作です。
頭の中にあるイメージを可視化し、細部まで検討を重ねながら図面に落とし込んでいく。このプロセスを何度も繰り返しました。
しかし、理想のかたちに近づけようとすればするほど、機能性とデザイン性のバランスに悩まされることになります。
リュック＝カジュアルの壁を越えるために
特に苦労したのは、「リュック」というフォーマットにおいて“上品さ”を保つことでした。
リュックはどうしてもカジュアルに見えがちで、工夫をしなければ学生用バッグのような印象になってしまいます。
加えて、私たちが目指した二層構造のバッグは構造自体が特殊で、製作の難易度も非常に高くなります。
実用性を優先しすぎればデザインが損なわれ、デザインに寄せすぎると今度は使い勝手が落ちる。このジレンマに何度も直面しました。
その中で、私たちが一貫して大切にしていたのが「ユニセックスで使えること」。
性別を問わず使えるデザインであることは、現代の子育てスタイルに寄り添ううえで、絶対に妥協したくないポイントでした。
何度も図面を描き直しながら、試作品のフロント部分をどう仕上げるべきか悩み続けていたとき、一つのアイデアが生まれます。
ビッグドロストポケットというブレイクスルー
それが、「ビッグドロストポケット」です。
子どもと一緒に過ごしていると、サッと取り出したいアイテムが意外と多いことに気づきました。
例えば、すぐに使いたいタオルや除菌シート、おやつやおもちゃなど。そういった細かいものをスマートに収納できるスペースを、あえて目立つフロント部分に設けることで、使い勝手とデザインの両立が可能になるのではないか。
そしてこのビッグドロストポケットが、私たちの開発における一つのブレイクスルーとなりました。
ポケットとしての機能性はもちろん、それ自体がバッグのアクセントにもなり、結果的にスタイリングにもなじむ仕上がりに。
「使いやすい」だけではなく、「持ちたい」と思えるバッグへと、一歩前進することができた瞬間でした。
ファーストサンプル、ついに完成
こうして、幾度もの試行錯誤を経て完成したファーストサンプル。
ハリがあり光沢感のある生地に、ビッグドロストポケットが程よい立体感と表情を加え、全体に引き締まった印象をもたらしています。
正面から見たときのバランス、背負ったときのシルエット、ファスナーの開閉や荷物の取り出しやすさまで、実際に使うシーンを想定しながら細部まで検証を重ねました。
まだまだ改良の余地はありますが、「こんなバッグがほしかった」と思えるかたちが、少しずつ見えてきた実感があります。

次回のBEHIND THE CRAFTでは、完成したファーストサンプルをもとに見えてきた課題や、そこからどのようにアップデートしていったのかを詳しくご紹介する予定です。

In the previous edition of BEHIND THE CRAFT, we shared our vision for the ideal mother’s backpack—what we believe is truly needed to support everyday life for parents. We talked about the mindset and criteria that guide our design process.
This time, we’d like to introduce the initial design prototype that was developed based on those ideas and requirements.
At Hugoo, creating our products is a continuous process of turning “Wouldn’t it be great if…” into reality, one step at a time.
From the beginning, our goal was to achieve both the functionality needed for real-life parenting and a sophisticated design that fits naturally into everyday style—without compromising on either.
We started by creating design sketches and technical drawings.
Translating the ideas in our heads into visual form, refining the details, and revising the structure again and again was a process filled with challenges.
The closer we tried to get to the ideal, the harder it became to balance function and form.
Overcoming the challenge of a backpack that doesn’t look too casual
One of the biggest difficulties was keeping a sense of elegance within the “backpack” format.
Backpacks tend to lean heavily toward casual, and without careful design, they can end up looking like something a student might carry.
To make things more complex, we chose a two-layer structure that offers more utility—but also significantly raises the difficulty of manufacturing.
If we focused too much on usability, the design suffered. But if we leaned too hard into aesthetics, we lost practicality.
We faced this dilemma many times.
Amid all this, one thing we consistently prioritized was making the bag unisex.
Designing something that anyone—regardless of gender—would feel comfortable carrying was non-negotiable for us, especially in today's parenting environment.
Even after redrawing the front section of the bag multiple times, we struggled to avoid that “student backpack” look.
That’s when a new idea emerged.
The breakthrough: a big drawstring pocket
We came up with the concept of a Big Drawstring Pocket.
When you're out with your child, there are countless moments when you need to grab something quickly—whether it’s a towel, sanitizing wipes, snacks, or small toys.
So we decided to place an easily accessible, generously sized pocket on the front of the bag.
This solved the functionality issue and added a distinctive visual element that helped elevate the design.
It became the breakthrough we needed.
Not only did this pocket serve a clear functional purpose, but it also acted as a design accent, giving the bag depth and personality.
It was a major step forward in creating a product that people would not only find useful but genuinely want to carry.
The first sample, finally completed
After all the trial and error, we finally completed our first official sample.
The firm, subtly glossy fabric gave the bag a premium feel, and the Big Drawstring Pocket added just the right amount of structure and expression.
We carefully examined every detail—from the front-facing silhouette and the way it looks when worn, to zipper smoothness and ease of access—all while imagining how it would actually be used in daily life.
There’s still plenty of room for improvement, but we’re finally starting to see the shape of the bag we’ve always wanted to create.
